One Woman Vegan Cosmetics Startup on Track to Make Quarter of a Million

A vegan makeup brand in Malaysia has proved popular by shipping 10,000 orders since its startup last year and earning $4727.57 (RM20k) a month which per annum is on track to hit 240k.

In 2016, 24-year-old Adlina Nadhirah had noticed that while veganism was increasing overseas, there was a lack of vegan makeup options in her own country.

Enter Velvet Vanity. This 100% vegan and cruelty-free cosmetic line was one of the first independent lipstick brands in the area.

The mind behind the business, Adlina Nadhirah, is involved from “formulation to manufacturing”, creating the colours herself using natural products. She works to provide shades that will complement a range of skin tones.

The innovative idea was funded with Nadhirah’s own savings. Since launching last year, Velvet Vanity has continued to grow in popularity. Nadhirah said that for her, going international was “one of the biggest milestones”.

The brand currently ships their products to the U.S, the U.K, Australia, India, UAE, Singapore, Brunei and Indonesia.

Nadhirah told the Vulcan Post, “Previous generations have been very into luxury makeup”, which is often tested on animals. However, younger generations are more aware than ever of their product choices.

Nadhirah primarily uses social media to connect with her target consumers: millennials. Her Instagram features testimonies from happy customers.

Nadhirah said, “I see other vegan makeup brands as healthy competitors. It is fun to see our local beauty scene growing!”

“I believe that makeup is a form of art, an expression and there is no limit to it.
Art is for everyone”.
